Urge Surfing

Urge surfing is a mindfulness practice for cravings and urges in which you observe the urge as a wave that rises, peaks and subsides, staying with it rather than either fighting it or acting on it.

How it works

The central observation is that urges are time-limited and fall on their own if not fed — the fight against them is what makes them feel permanent. The practice involves watching the physical sensation, noting where it sits and how it changes, and letting it pass. Knowing that the peak arrives and then recedes changes what the moment feels like.
