Tackling Rumination

Rumination is repetitive thinking about a problem that stays abstract and evaluative — circling why something happened and what it says about you — and it is distinguished from problem-solving by producing no next step.

How it works

The most useful distinction in this tool is between abstract and concrete thinking. "Why does this always happen to me" is abstract and self-sustaining; "what specifically happened, and what is one thing I could do" is concrete and terminates. The tool catches you in the abstract mode and practises the switch, which is a skill rather than an insight.
