STOP Skill

STOP is a four-step DBT skill used in the moment before reacting: Stop, Take a step back, Observe, Proceed mindfully.

Worry and Anxiety5 minMAXtext or voice

How it works

The skill's whole value is in the first letter. Stopping is a physical act — not moving, not replying, not sending — and it is what creates the space the other three steps need. Observe means naming what is actually happening, inside and outside, before deciding. It is short enough to run in the pause after someone says something you did not expect.

Grounded in

DBT distress tolerance, Marsha Linehan. Data note: affected by §7.
