Physiological Sigh

A physiological sigh is a double inhale through the nose followed by a single long exhale through the mouth — the pattern the body produces on its own during sobbing and before sleep.

How it works

This is the shortest practice in the catalog and the easiest to use in the moment, because two minutes is short enough that you will actually do it. The second, shorter inhale stacks on top of the first before the long exhale releases. It is designed for acute moments rather than daily practice — the sort of thing you do in a stairwell between two hard conversations.

Grounded in

research on the physiological sigh, Huberman and colleagues; the pattern was described in respiratory physiology well before it was popularised.
