A moment this can meet
When Jacobson's Relaxation may fit
Someone asks why you look tired and you say "I'm fine" — and mean it, because you genuinely can't feel anything specific. Meanwhile your jaw has been clenched through three meetings and your hands have been fists in your pockets on the commute. Tension held long enough stops registering as tension. This practice makes it register again.
How it works
The tensing is what makes it work. You squeeze one muscle group deliberately — hard enough to feel it, a few seconds — then release, and the contrast is unmistakable in a way that "just relax" never is. Working through the body in a fixed order means you cover the places you would not have thought to check — jaw, shoulders and hands are the usual surprises. Slow, deliberate muscle release is linked with a calmer, more settled body state for many people.
People may choose this for
- Physical stress you can't locate — tired but "fine"
- Winding down a body that has been braced all day
- A body-first option when the mind is too busy for thinking tools
- Before bed, when tension is what's keeping you surface-level
Grounded in
progressive relaxation, Edmund Jacobson, 1938.
