Implementation Intentions

An implementation intention is a plan in the form "if situation X occurs, then I will do Y" — binding an intended action to a specific cue rather than leaving it to be remembered.

How it works

Intentions fail at the moment of execution far more often than at the moment of decision. Specifying the cue in advance moves the decision out of the moment, when willingness is lowest. The format is deliberately rigid: a vague cue produces nothing, while a concrete one attached to something already in your day works.
