Cognitive Shuffle

The cognitive shuffle is a technique in which you deliberately picture a sequence of unconnected, emotionally neutral objects, one after another, to prevent the mind from forming the coherent narrative that keeps it alert.

How it works

Racing thoughts at night are usually one long connected chain. This breaks the connections on purpose: a random ordinary object, then another with no relation to it, held only briefly. The deliberate incoherence is the mechanism — it resembles the drifting quality of falling asleep rather than the sustained focus of thinking.
