How it works
Racing thoughts at night are usually one long connected chain. This breaks the connections on purpose: a random ordinary object, then another with no relation to it, held only briefly. The deliberate incoherence is the mechanism — it resembles the drifting quality of falling asleep rather than the sustained focus of thinking.
