Breathe Deeply (Diaphragmatic)

Diaphragmatic breathing means drawing breath low so the belly moves out on the inhale and the chest stays relatively still — the pattern breathing defaults to at rest, and the one it abandons under stress.

How it works

Under pressure, breathing tends to move high and short. This practice puts a hand on the belly so you have direct feedback on where the breath is going, then slows the exhale. Slow exhalation is linked with a shift towards a calmer state in published research. Four minutes is long enough to notice a difference and short enough to use before something.

diaphragmatic breathing and vagal tone research.
