Body Scan Meditation

A body scan is a mindfulness practice in which you move attention slowly and deliberately through the body, part by part, noticing whatever sensation is there without trying to change it.

When Body Scan Meditation may fit

You get home, sit down, and realise your shoulders have been somewhere near your ears since 11 am. You didn't decide to hold them there; the day did it, and you weren't consulted. The body has been keeping a record of the whole day — you just haven't read it.

How it works

The instruction is genuinely to notice rather than to relax — relaxation sometimes follows, but chasing it turns the practice into another task to succeed at. You move from the feet up, part by part, at a pace set by the guide. Attention will wander; bringing it back is the practice, not a failure of it. Many people use this one at night, though it is not specifically a sleep tool. On ManoYatra it's especially natural by voice, paced gently with room for silence between prompts.

People may choose this for

  • Reconnecting with the body after a tense, heads-down day
  • Winding down at night (many people's use, though not its only one)
  • Noticing where stress physically sits — jaw, shoulders, stomach
  • A longer present-moment practice once short ones feel natural
