Anxiety Submodalities

A submodality shift is a technique in which you alter the sensory qualities of a mental image — its size, distance, brightness, volume — and notice how the feeling attached to it changes.

How it works

Anxious thoughts usually arrive with a sensory form: a picture that is close and loud, or a voice with a particular tone. This tool asks you to describe that form precisely, then deliberately change it — push it further away, drain the colour, drop the volume — and check the feeling after each change. It works on the packaging rather than the content, which makes it useful when the content has already been argued with enough.

Grounded in

submodality work from the NLP tradition. Presented as a perspective-shift practice; note this has a thinner published base than the CBT, DBT and ACT tools around it.
